The back loop is the pocket that the chairs back post slides through to affix it to the frame. To determine this measurement remove the back from the chair and lay it out flat. Measure from one edge to the very first stitch line that you come to for the full width of that pocket. The width of the back loop is custom, but a typical director's chair with round shaped back posts measuring 1" in diameter require a 2.5" back loop.
